Voluntary Out-of-Home Firearm Storage
Firearm owners, instructors, and retailers across Louisiana are joining together to raise awareness about the role of secure firearm storage in suicide prevention and to provide options for secure and voluntary out-of-home firearm storage in local communities.
Why do gun owners sometimes store firearms away from the home?
They are travelling out of state and want to keep firearms secure while they are away.
A teenager in the home is in crisis and at risk for suicide.
The grandkids are visiting for a week.
A couple is divorcing and arguments are getting heated.
A family member is experiencing mental health or substance use concerns.
The homeowner is listing the home for sale and wants firearms to be secure while showings occur.

The Armory Project: How It Works
Consider if temporary firearm storage may be an option for you.
Storing your firearms outside the home temporarily could be helpful in a number of scenarios.
Visit a TAP partner location in a community near you.

Speak with a representative at the gun shop about The Armory Project.
The folks at a partner gun shop will be happy to discuss the program with you and provide details about the options the shop offers (each shop determines their own policies and processes).
Decide whether to store your firearm(s) temporarily.
If you decide to store your firearms with a TAP partner, you may be asked to review and/or sign an agreement when you drop off the firearms. The purpose of this agreement is to outline some details, such as how long you might be storing the firearms and how you will retrieve your firearms when you are ready. TAP firearm retailers follow the law and utilize their professional discretion in choosing how to accept firearms for temporary storage and return those firearms when the owner is ready to have them back.
When you are ready, return to the gun shop to retrieve your firearm(s).
Follow the process you discussed with the firearm retailer when you dropped off the firearms for temporary storage.

Important
As TAP partners, firearm retail shops offer temporary, out-of-home firearm storage to veterans and other customers. Each shop participates to the extent they are able and according to their own terms. As part of the program, firearm retailers agree to follow the law and utilize their professional discretion in choosing how to accept firearms for temporary storage and return those firearms when the owner is ready to have them back. Through discussions with the firearm owner, a retailer may choose to establish a uniform policy for all temporary storage situations or to handle each situation on a case-by-case basis. TAP does not make any guarantees regarding the availability of firearm storage at our partners at any given time.
Get Involved
The Armory Project brings together firearm retailers and others who want to prevent firearm suicides in our communities. TAP provides suicide prevention training to firearm retailers and their staff and does a monthly check-in with every retailer to ensure they have the resources they need. TAP also provides information about resources through the Department of Veterans Affairs and community organizations that can help people in need access mental health and other resources.
